You hand over your deposit, show up for your session, and then you wait. And wait. And wonder why it takes so long to get your family photos back. I get it. You’re excited to see those images of your kids actually smiling at the same time. You want to order prints for Grandma. You’re ready to update that wall gallery in your living room.

But here’s the thing. Editing your family session takes more time, and I want to pull back the curtain so you understand what happens after I click that shutter. As a family photographer in Columbia and Lexington SC, I spend hours on every session to make sure you get images you’ll love forever.
In this post, I’ll walk you through:
I Review Hundreds of Photos from Your Session
Your one-hour family session? I shoot around hundreds of photos during that time.
I look at every single one. I check for the best expressions, the sharpest focus, and the moments where everyone looks their best. This step alone takes hours.

I’m not just picking my favorites. I’m choosing the images that tell your family’s story and show genuine connection.
Each Photo Gets Individual Attention
Once I select the keepers, the real editing begins. I work on each image individually.
I adjust the lighting so your photos look bright and clean. I fix color casts so your skin tones look natural, not too orange or too green. I remove distractions like stray hairs across faces or that random water bottle in the corner.

I also smooth out temporary skin issues like bug bites or that scratch your toddler got at the playground yesterday. But I keep the freckles, the dimples, and all the things that make your family uniquely yours.
This detailed work takes time. A full gallery of 50 to 75 edited images requires about six to eight hours of hands-on editing.
Consistency Matters Across Your Entire Gallery
You know how some photographers deliver galleries where every photo looks different? Some are warm, some are cool, some are way too dark?

I make sure that doesn’t happen. I edit your entire gallery so the images flow together beautifully. This consistency matters when you want to create a wall gallery or a photo album.
When I offer family photography, I think about how these images will look in your home. They need to work together as a collection.
I Protect Your Investment with Quality Work
You invested in professional photos because you want images that last. Quick edits don’t stand the test of time.

I take the time to do things right so your photos still look beautiful in five, ten, or twenty years. I don’t use trendy filters that will look dated next year. I focus on timeless editing that keeps the focus on your family.
The Wait Is Worth It
I know waiting feels hard when you’re excited. But rushing through edits means I’d miss details. I’d deliver work that doesn’t meet the standards you deserve.

Most professional photographers have a turnaround time of two to four weeks. This gives us the space to deliver our best work without burning out or cutting corners. If you are also ordering custom artwork, it may take anywhere between 4 to 10 weeks.
Your session documented real moments with the people you love most. Those moments deserve the time and care I put into every edit.

When your gallery arrives in your inbox, you’ll see why the process matters. You’ll have images that make you feel something every time you look at them.
And that’s exactly what I want for every family I photograph.
