Getting Your Home Ready for Lifestyle Family Photography

When families book a lifestyle session with me, one of the first things they worry about is their home. I hear questions like “Does it need to be perfect?” or “What should I change before you come?” all the time. And I want to start by gently saying this: your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine for it to be beautiful.

When I photograph families, I’m not looking for perfection. I’m looking for light, connection, and the quiet ways your family lives together. Preparing your home is less about styling and more about creating space for you to simply be present with one another.

Here’s how I recommend getting your home ready for a lifestyle family session with me.

Start By Choosing a Few Meaningful Spaces

We don’t need to use every room in your home. In fact, I usually work best when we focus on just a few areas where your family naturally gathers. This might be your living room, a bedroom, a nursery, or a kitchen filled with morning light.

Before your session, I encourage you to notice where the light falls during the time we’ll be photographing. Soft window light is always beautiful, and even one well-lit corner can be enough to create meaningful images.

Clear Surfaces, Not Personality

I never want your home to feel empty or stripped of who you are. At the same time, clearing off countertops, nightstands, and coffee tables helps keep the focus on your family rather than visual distractions.

Think simple:

  • Put away loose papers and clutter.
  • Tuck away items that don’t add to the story.
  • Leave pieces that feel personal, like a favorite chair, a stack of books, or a blanket you love.

Your home should still feel lived in, just gently simplified.

Let The Light In

One of the easiest things you can do before I arrive is open curtains and blinds. Natural light brings softness and warmth into your images, and it helps your home feel calm and airy.

If a room feels dark, that’s okay. I’ll guide us toward the best light once I’m there. You don’t need to solve this on your own.

Choose Neutral Bedding And Textiles When Possible

If we’ll be photographing in bedrooms or nurseries, neutral bedding can make a big difference. Soft whites, creams, or muted tones photograph beautifully and keep the images feeling timeless.

This doesn’t mean everything needs to match. It just means choosing tones that won’t pull attention away from the connection between you and your children.

Don’t Stress About the “Little Messes”

This is something I say often, and I truly mean it. Toys, books, and signs of childhood are part of your story. I don’t expect your home to look untouched – I expect it to feel real.

If something feels distracting, I’ll gently move it during the session. My goal is always to make this experience feel calm, not overwhelming.

Think About How You Want the Session to Feel

Before your session, I love when families take a moment to think about how they want their images to feel. Cozy. Calm. Playful. Intimate. Slow.

That feeling often guides which rooms we use and how we move through the session. Lifestyle photography with me isn’t about posing – it’s about creating space for natural moments to unfold.

A Gentle Reminder

Your home already holds so much love. The walls have heard laughter, tears, and late-night whispers. When you invite me into that space, you’re inviting me into your story exactly as it is right now.

Family Photography

You don’t need to make your home perfect for lifestyle family photography. You just need to show up with the people you love most. I’ll take care of the rest, and together we’ll create images that feel honest, emotional, and deeply meaningful.
