Choosing Outfits for Your Family Photo Session

Hi friend! I’m so glad you’re here. If you’ve booked a session with me, first of all, thank you. I know how much trust it takes to invite someone into your family’s story. Whether this is your very first session or your fifth, I want you to feel completely supported every step of the way.

Family Photo Session

Among the questions I get from mamas, the most frequent one  is:

“What should we wear for our family session?”

I get it. You want to look beautiful without feeling overdone, and you want your children to feel comfortable while still looking timeless. You don’t want anything that feels too trendy, too stiff, or too stressful.

So today, I want to gently walk you through how we choose outfits that not only photograph beautifully, but feel true to you, and create that soft, connected look you see throughout my portfolio.

Start with You

Yes, you, mama. I always recommend starting with your outfit first because when you feel confident and radiant, it changes the energy of the whole session. We’ll pull pieces that flatter your figure, move gently, and photograph like a dream, and don’t worry, I’m here to guide you through every option.

Many of my clients choose something from my curated Client Wardrobe, which is full of soft, neutral-toned dresses that feel beautiful and comfortable (because yes, you deserve both).

Keep It Soft & Simple

Your connection is the focus, not your clothing. I always recommend sticking to light, neutral tones and soft textures. Consider warm gray, oatmeal, soft sage, dusty blue, ivory, or cream. These colors keep the attention on your faces and work beautifully with both natural light and studio sessions.

Simple pieces allow your love to shine through.

Coordinate, Avoid Matching

Gone are the days of identical outfits. Instead, we aim for a cohesive, layered look where every person’s outfit complements the others without being too uniform. We’ll mix textures, tones, and a few subtle patterns to add depth while keeping everything soft and seamless.

Once your session is booked, we’ll plan it together during your wardrobe and planning appointment.

Dress Little Ones for Comfort

Your children’s comfort is always a priority. I’ll help you choose pieces that allow movement, feel gentle on their skin, and keep them feeling like themselves. Whether that’s a classic romper, a linen dress, or something soft and simple from my wardrobe collection, we’ll find what works best for them and the story we’re telling.

We want them to play, snuggle, and explore, not feel restricted or fussy. And yes, barefoot is always welcome.

Let Me Take the Stress Out of It

You don’t have to run to the mall or stay up late shopping online. With every full session, you have access to my client wardrobe, not just for babies and toddlers, but for mamas, too. We’ll plan your session look together, and I’ll send styling guidance, brand suggestions, and even direct links if you’d prefer to wear your own pieces.

From the moment you book to the day your artwork is installed, my goal is to serve you in every detail, including what you wear.

Your Session Should Feel Like You

These portraits aren’t about dressing up and pretending. They’re about pausing to celebrate your family, just as you are. The clothing we select helps reinforce that narrative. They’re the gentle backdrop to your love, your connection, and this chapter of your motherhood journey.

If you’re preparing for your session and feeling unsure, take a deep breath. You’re in good hands. I’m here to walk beside you and make the process feel easy and meaningful.

Let’s create something beautiful together.

If you’ve booked your session and want to start planning outfits, I can’t wait to meet with you. If you’re still considering a session, I’d love to connect and share more about what makes the LGP experience so special.
