Hi friend! I’m so happy you’re here. If you’re a mama planning a family or children’s session, first, I see you. I know how much heart goes into just showing up for photos with little ones. Whether you’re prepping outfits, bribing toddlers with snacks, or wondering if your kids will even look at the camera, you’re not alone.
As a mama of two and a Columbia, SC family photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of little ones over the years, and the good news is that we don’t need perfection. We just need a connection and a little bit of play.
So today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips for helping kids feel comfortable, relaxed, and even excited in front of the camera.

I know it feels natural to say, “Be good and smile!” But here’s a secret: that puts a lot of pressure on little ones. Instead, we want them to be themselves. I’ll never ask them to “say cheese”. I’ll talk to them, play games, tell a silly joke, or even have them show me their best dinosaur roar. We want real smiles, and those come from comfort and connection, not instructions.

Wiggly? Shy? Silly? That’s perfect. Kids aren’t meant to sit still, and they definitely don’t need to behave like little adults. My sessions are designed to be relaxed and child-led. We take breaks, we play, and we follow their lead. Some of the most beautiful images happen when we stop trying to pose and simply let them be.
Bringing a favorite (neutral-colored) lovey or toy can help kids feel safe and settled. It gives them something to hold and talk about and often adds a sweet, personal touch to the session. For toddlers and younger kiddos, I may ask them questions about their favorite animal, snack, or superhero, and just like that, we’re best friends.

I’ve been photographing families in Columbia, SC for years, and I know how to meet children where they are – whether they’re shy, spirited, sensitive, or silly. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to relax and enjoy the moment. Your little ones feel your energy. If you’re calm and present, they’ll follow your lead.
Also, I always sneak in the in-between moments – the ones where you’re snuggling, tickling, or looking at each other with love. Sometimes those are the photos that speak the loudest.

It’s great to let your kids know they’ll be taking special pictures with someone kind and fun. But try not to over-explain or build up too many expectations. Keeping it light and casual (“We’re going to play in the park with Miss Lynn-D and she has her camera!”) helps ease any pressure they might feel.

At the end of the day, my job isn’t to force your kids to smile. It’s to gently guide them into a space where they feel safe being themselves. That’s when the magic happens. And I promise that those tiny hands wrapped around your fingers, the sideways glances, the soft giggles – those are the moments you’ll treasure forever.
If you’re ready to book a children’s or family session in Columbia, Lexington, Chapin, or surrounding areas, I’d be honored to help you preserve this season in the most meaningful way.
