What to Wear for Newborn Sessions

As a professional photographer, one of the most common questions I get from parents is, “What should we wear for our newborn photo session?” Choosing the right outfits can feel a bit daunting, but with a few simple guidelines, you can look and feel your best while making sure the focus remains on your beautiful new baby.

At Lynn-D Gunter Photography, we understand that the newborn stage is both precious and brief. That’s why we aim to create a stress-free, relaxing experience for our clients, including helping you find the right clothes. Whether you’re a seasoned parent or a first-time mom or dad, let’s dive into some tips on what to wear for your newborn session.

Stick to Neutral, Comfortable Tones

When it comes to newborn photography, the best option is to keep your clothes simple and balanced. Neutral colors like cream, beige, and light gray work beautifully. They make you look gorgeous and don’t overshadow or distract from your baby’s delicate features.

It is best to avoid bold patterns, graphics, or anything too bright because that can take the attention away from the baby, the star of the show.

Comfort is equally important. My newborn studio is quite warm so your baby feels cozy and comfortable during the session. Dressing in breathable, loose-fitting clothing like a flowy dress or blouse paired with simple leggings or slacks is an excellent option.

Do not wear anything too tight. You would want to enjoy the session with your baby, which will be difficult if you have to adjust your clothes too often.

Don’t Forget About Layering

Although the studio will be warm, it’s still a good idea to bring along a light sweater, cardigan, or jacket. An extra layer is always a good idea, as it offers you the flexibility to wear or remove the layers, which will keep you comfortable. Also, this can be helpful if your baby gets annoyed and needs some extra cuddling.

Dads can go for a simple button-down shirt or a polo paired with dark jeans. Here also, the color palette is valid. Keep it neutral and avoid wearing distracting colors.

Coordinate with the Family

If you have other family members also participating in the photo session, try to coordinate your clothes so that your photos look more attractive. You can go for the same color palette, but this does not mean that everything should be a perfect match. You can mix and match solid colors and subtle patterns to create a balance.

The most important thing during the session is that everyone is comfortable and confident about their clothing. The focus of the session is your connection with each other, so don’t let your outfit bother you too much.

Prepare for the Unexpected

We all know that newborns can be quite unpredictable. So bring some extra clothes for both yourself and your baby. Spitups, diaper blowouts, and other mishaps are part of life. Having a backup outfit means that you’ll stay at ease.

If you keep all these things in mind, your newborn session is going to be a piece of cake. You’ll be ready for any unexpected accident, and your wardrobe will be all set to be photographed.
